Dorm Room Ideas

Jul 20, 2008 3:18 PM
Hi all!:)

My daughter will be leaving for college in mid-September. I wanted to get a jump on picking up things for her room, instead of waiting until the last minute. I know this can be a monumental task and an expensive one.

I was hoping I had some experienced parents or students out there, to give me some ideas. I do know the one major mistake most make is buying regular twin sheets instead of the twin XL sheets. Other than that, I am clueless. I cannot remember how I managed to pack up my room at home and get everything I wanted packed into boxes for my first trip to my dorm room, 28 years ago. How did I manage to fit everything into one small area? ?:|

I am hoping to find everything I need at TJMaxx, since they are advertising their dorm deals right now.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Dorm rooms tend to be itty bitty. This might be a good time for your daughter to start weeding out and storing things away that she doesn't NEED. Keep in mind that she will pick up things as the school year progresses. On top of that, I'm sure her roommate will be bringing in stuff as well. Does she know her roommate yet? It might be a great idea to get with the roommate and see what she plans on bringing into the room. This might cut down on on the amount of stuff your kiddo has to take with her.

I don't have any advice as my kids are still young, but wanted to wish your daughter good luck!

Thank You Angela, for wishing my daughter Good Luck!

Thank You Shannon for giving my daughter the idea of weeding out her things before she leaves. Do you think you could come by, be the drill sergeant, and make her work? LOL

I saw her dorm room last week and it is very, very, small! All they provide is a bed, desk, and wardrobe closet. There is no lighting at all. I need to head over to TJMaxx and see what they have to offer in the way of storage options and lamps for the dorm room.

I was hoping that some of our wonderful, smart, members of “What’s In”…might have seen something great for dorm room storage. Is there anyone out there that can help me? I would really appreciate any, and all help that I can get!

my first suggestion: under the bed storage. anywhere that you can cram a few pairs of shoes or a couple of tshirts, you should. it may not be the most glamorous thing, but i can assure you that it works!

second: depending on where her bathroom is located (communal one down the end of the hall versus one that she and 3 other girls share) she'll need some sorry of container to carry her shower products in. i recommend some type of caddy, and they usually come in a variety of fun colors.

third: mirrors, they always make a room look bigger!

fourth: hangers... can never have enough. i personally go for the hot greens and pinks, but anything will do.

lastly, i am a pillow fanatic. i just love them. my recommendation would be for some type of larger one so that she can rest on her bed while sitting up. i like the "husband" or "boyfriend" ones (depending on who you ask) but they usually aren't too expensive and last a long time.

hope this helps! be glad to answer any more questions you may have. and wish your daughter the best of luck, hope she enjoys her first year!

Thanks Lisa! :-D

I made a list from your suggestions and this is what we have purchased so far:

She picked out a comforter that is black, with a white design and pink fringe around the edges.

A large pillow that matches the comforter. (I am going to surprise her with a “boyfriend” pillow.)

Two “under the bed” storage drawers. The drawer slides into a fabric and plastic box. This was a GREAT idea! We found out that she doesn’t have any drawers in her room, just one wardrobe.

We found black hangers at TJMaxx (10 for $6.99). The new velvet covered hangers that make a lot of space. They also do not make shoulder bumps, if you are hanging a sweater or have to drip-dry an item.

We still need to purchase the shower caddy (her bathroom is at the end of the hall) and the mirrors. She absolutely loved the idea of mirrors; due to the fact, her room is extremely small. Her room is the size of a small box and she has a roommate.

If you have any more ideas, I am all ears! ;)
